
Scientific Illustration of Marine Mollusks

Celebrate National Fossil Week with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History!
Discover the intersection of art and science in this hands-on illustration workshop referencing the Museum’s marine mollusk fossil collection. Led by a master naturalist, the class begins with a guided nature walk through coastal ecosystems to explore the habitats of modern and ancient marine mollusks. You will learn the fundamentals of scientific illustration using charcoal and graphite, focusing on hue, composition, shadow, light, layering techniques, and mixed media.
Designed for aspiring artists and creative naturalists alike—no experience needed, just a passion for the natural world and a desire to create.
Participants will have a completed art piece to take home at the conclusion of the workshop. Open to ages 16+/all experience levels. All supplies included.
