Exploring Science Through Art

Science illustration, like writing or photography, is a form of conveying information. It requires artistic skills, curiosity, keen observation, and scientific knowledge. The illustrator, like the scientist, is concerned not only with accuracy, but also with the context of the information being communicated.

Observing nature has long been the practice of both artists and scientists. Over 30,000 years ago, humans began recording the natural world through detailed cave paintings of animals. Depictions of nature have persisted across the world throughout ancient civilizations to modern times. Today, science illustration is essential to increasing scientific knowledge and inspiring conservation.

This lecture from Andrea Dingeldein, a local artist and educator often featured in the Museum’s annual exhibition, The Art of Nature, explores science illustration, both historical and contemporary, and its importance as a tool to observe and connect with nature.
