SUMMARY:Redwood Grain Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on masterclass\, artist Jane Kim will demonstrate the tree ring printing process used to create the artworks of Treasured Trees. Attendees will acquire basic know-how of the skills and tools required to practice this beautiful technique at home. \nREGISTER\nTicket Price: $40 General\, $35 Member \nAge limit: 13 years and up \nMaterials: Artist provided\, notepads\, and pencils \nAccessibility: This workshop will take place outdoors in the amphitheater of Tyrrell Park next to the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. The amphitheater is accessed by stairs or a semi-paved pathway through the park (it is not fully ADA accessible). Restrooms are available in the Museum. Please wear warm layers. In the event of rain\, we will shift this program indoors. \n\nAbout the Speaker\nJane is a visual artist\, science illustrator\, and the founder of Ink Dwell. Her art career started when she was a little girl\, obsessively painting flowers and bears on the walls of her bedroom. She received more formal training with a BFA in Printmaking from RISD and then attended CSU Monterey Bay\, where she received a master’s certificate in Science Illustration. She has created large-scale public art across the country\, including the Wall of Birds at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and produced works for the National Aquarium\, the de Young Museum\, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum\, and more. She is the creator of the Migrating Mural campaign\, a series of public installations that highlight wildlife along migration corridors it shares with people. She still enjoys painting flowers and bears\, though nowadays she doesn’t get in trouble for painting on the walls. \nAs the inaugural Forest Fellow of the Sempervirens Fund\, the oldest land trust in California and one dedicated to the protection of the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains\, Jane Kim has spent the last year studying the wonders of redwood trees. In order to begin to understand the redwood\, the artist learned\, they can not be studied in isolation. The trees are both a product of their ecosystem and a force that transforms it. Using the tree itself\, the artwork begins with ink impressions of the tree rings collected from Camp Jones Gulch. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tracking California's Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:Where are all the dinosaur fossils in California? What happened to California dinosaurs? Did they exist here? Were there dinosaurs in Santa Cruz? If not\, why? \nLearn the answers to those questions and much more as we unearth the mysteries of California’s dinosaurs. Join vertebrate paleontologist and environmental geologist\, Prof. Hilde Schwartz\, as she takes us back in time to explore the rich history and hidden secrets of California’s fossil record. Light refreshments will be served prior to the start of the program. After the lecture\, there will be audience Q&A. \nREGISTER HERE\nSpeaker: Prof. Hilde L. Schwartz\, UCSC’s Dept. of Earth and Planetary Science\nClass Fee: $12 – Museum Members receive a special discounted price applied at checkout. \nAbout the Speaker:\nHilde Schwartz is an earth scientist who’s dabbled in both geology and paleontology. Her research always begins ‘in the field’\, and her main field regions have been in Africa (Kenya\, Tanzania\, Egypt) and the American southwest (including California). Hilde’s interest in dinosaurs began when she was a child (naturally)\, but was fully realized when I was invited to participate in research with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History on dinosaur sites in New Mexico. In the late 1990s\, she proposed a new class at UCSC called ‘The Natural History of Dinosaurs’\, which she taught from 1999 until her retirement from the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department in 2024. Hilde maintains an active interest in dinosaur research and will always be a dinosaur enthusiast. \n
