About 95% of kelp forests in Northern California have disappeared. The Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project is a group of volunteer divers who are working to restore the iconic yet vulnerable kelp forests of Monterey Bay. Divers are trained to safely and effectively cull kelp-eating purple sea urchins, with the goal of returning kelp to Monterey, which supports biodiversity and traps carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
