SUMMARY:The Ancient American Cheetah
DESCRIPTION:For Safari September’s grand finale\, travel back in time to learn the mysteries of the prehistoric American Cheetah! \nDiscover how this extinct top predator once dominated ancient North America and why it no longer exists. Using cutting-edge paleogenomics research\, uncover how scientists use prehistoric data to inform future conservation efforts. \nAfter the presentation\, Dr. Josh Kapp from UCSC will share a DNA collection kit and invite audience members to participate in a study that aims to refine techniques for aging individuals based on DNA collected from hair samples. Participation in this study is both voluntary and anonymous. \n  \nREGISTRATION\nSpeaker: Dr. Molly Cassatt-Johnstone – Paleogenomics Lab; University of California\, Santa Cruz \nClass Size: 60 participants\nMaterials: Light refreshments will be served prior to the start of the program.\nClass Fee: $5 – General | FREE for Museum Members \nAbout the Speaker:\nMolly Cassatt-Johnstone is a PhD candidate in the Paleogenomics Lab\, where she studies the evolution and conservation of felids in North America. She’s passionate about making science exciting and accessible\, and loves sharing the hidden stories preserved in ancient DNA. Her work spans a wide range of species—including mammoths\, wolves\, Steller’s sea cows\, bison\, horses\, and\, of course\, big cats—using genomics to explore their past and guide conservation. \n  \nThe Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History is thrilled to partner with the Cheetah Conservation Fund and Kara Capaldo Photography to present Safari September\, a series that highlights the majesty of mammals\, FURocious felines\, and the importance of keystone species conservation.
