DESCRIPTION:Join Art of Nature exhibit artist Erin Ellis for an immersive botanical illustration workshop focused on the beauty and complexity of Hummingbird Sage. Found growing right outside the Museum\, this fragrant native plant offers a perfect subject for slowing down and observing the intricate details of the natural world.\nREGISTER\nThe workshop will begin with an introduction to Hummingbird Sage\, exploring its role in local ecosystems\, including its relationships with pollinators\, moth species\, and its ethnobotanical significance. Participants will then be guided step-by-step through drawing the plant\, learning approachable techniques to break down its unique shapes and textures. Working from live plant material\, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of plant structure by closely observing and even gently deconstructing specimens. The majority of the session will focus on drawing\, with time dedicated to adding color using watercolor or colored pencil. \nThis workshop is designed for all skill levels and emphasizes curiosity\, observation\, and building confidence in drawing from nature. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum for a creative evening with Art of Nature artist Calene Luzco Fletcher in this sip and paint style workshop focused on fish illustration! \nWe’ll begin with a short overview of fish and how they have been represented in scientific guidebooks\, with a look at the role illustration plays in documenting aquatic life. From there\, we’ll explore basic fish external anatomy to support accurate and confident drawing. \nParticipants will sketch their own fish studies from observation. DESCRIPTION:Join author Sophie Wood Brinker and Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History educator Jenny Rieke for an afternoon of birding and nature journaling at Neary Lagoon. We’ll explore the lagoon’s rich habitat together\, then settle in to sketch and observe what we find. Art supplies are provided — no experience necessary. This event celebrates the launch of The Birds of Santa Cruz\, published by Heyday Books. All skill levels welcome. \n$35 – General\n$5 Off – Museum Members\nREGISTER\nAbout the Speaker\nSophie Wood Brinker (she/her) is a science illustrator who works with paint and pencil to communicate the brilliance and intricacy of the ecosystems that surround us. Her art scales from drawing the texture of butterfly wings to painting fifteen-foot protest banners. Sophie also works in a small town library\, helping spread library joy and community resources. As a Quaker\, Sophie grew up sitting in intergenerational circles hearing messages spoken out of silence. She has a BA in peace and global studies from Earlham College and is a graduate of the Science Illustration Program at California State University\, Monterey Bay. Sophie grew up in Santa Cruz\, California\, on unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe\, and lives in Bolinas\, California\, on unceded Coast Miwok territory. www.sophiewoodbrinker.com \n  \nAccessibility and Logistics \n\nBring binoculars and sketchbooks if you have them!\nWe will meet at the California St. entrance to Neary Lagoon Park (110 California St.). There is a small parking lot and free 2-hour parking along California St. Bike racks and restrooms are available at the entrance.\nWe will walk ~1 mile on a generally flat pathway and floating boardwalk. The trail is ADA accessible and the only restroom access is at the trailhead.\nCome prepared with layers\, sunscreen\, water\, and snacks.
