You otter swing by to celebrate Safari September! \nThe Museum is thrilled to partner with the Cheetah Conservation Fund and Sea Otter Savvy to showcase these marvelous mammals all month long.\n \nJoin us for a hare-raising adventure as wildlife photographers display their images of endangered species and paleo-mammalogists share their cutting-edge discoveries. We will also launch the next installment of our newest Naturalist Night lecture series\, which will feature everything from sea otters and surfers\, to the extinct North American cheetah. But the safari doesn’t stop there! As a special treat\, we’re not kitten when we tell you that the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is bringing baby animals for adoption\, or just to snuggle. At the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History\, you gain new wisdom about local ecology\, native plants\, and sustainable gardening while connecting with nature outdoors. It’s time to get your hands dirty! Join us and volunteer in the Museum’s Garden Learning Center and Pilkington Creek. \n​Sign up via Volgistics or email volunteer@santacruzmuseum.org to register.\nWhat to Expect\n\nThis project requires volunteer support with general landscaping\, occasional watering\, weeding\, and replanting.\nPlease let us know if you need special accommodations when you email to RSVP.\nThis program happens rain or shine\, but we will cancel in the case of muddy conditions or inclement weather.\nAll ages are welcome; children under 14 require adult supervision. Using cutting-edge paleogenomics research\, uncover how scientists use prehistoric data to inform future conservation efforts. \nAfter the presentation\, Dr. Josh Kapp from UCSC will share a DNA collection kit and invite audience members to participate in a study that aims to refine techniques for aging individuals based on DNA collected from hair samples.
