SUMMARY:Returning Fire to Coastal Prairies: Lessons Learned
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the flower-filled month of April with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History and the Santa Cruz County chapter of the California Native Plant Society as we spotlight the science and beauty of local flora. \nJoin graduate researcher Georgia Vasey for an engaging talk on the role of prescribed fire in restoring California’s coastal prairies. The presentation will begin with an accessible overview of how fire shapes both aboveground plant communities and belowground ecological processes across the Central Coast. From there\, Georgia will share exciting preliminary findings from her work at Wilder Ranch State Park\, where she is studying how fire can help reestablish vibrant native wildflowers. \nWhether you’re drawn to spring blooms\, curious about land stewardship\, or interested in the intersection of ecology and restoration\, this lecture offers a fascinating look at how fire can be a powerful tool for renewal. \n  \nRegister Here\nTicket Price: $12 \nDiscounts: $5 off for Members \nAge limit: 10+ \n\n \nGeorgia Vasey is a fourth-year Environmental Studies PhD student in the Holl Restoration Ecology Lab at UC Santa Cruz. She studies how to restore California coastal prairie ecosystems\, with an emphasis on fire management and annual wildflowers. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nThank you to California Native Plant Society for partnering with us on this lecture.

SUMMARY:Herpetology in Byrne-Milliron Forest
DESCRIPTION:Spring has sprung! And with the new sunny\, warm days\, the forest comes alive with activity! Young lizards are basking out on the chaparral outcroppings\, adult newts are on the move under the redwoods to find their birth ponds and streams \, a snake or two will be hunting under the oaks for lunch\, and even the shy salamanders might come out for a walk in a warm\, rainy day. Join us for a hike as we try to spot some of these amazing critters while we explore one of Santa Cruz county’s best hidden gems\, right in South county\, next to Corralitos and Watsonville! \nREGISTER\nPrice\nGeneral: $25\nMembers: $5 off \nAbout the Speaker \nGus Porras-Center began taking care of the Byrne-Milliron Forest in February 2025\, after a decade of being a lab scientist studying how very tiny worms make decisions (to shimmy one way or another!). He has loved every scaly\, slimy creature since before he could say a single word\, and he cannot stop himself from sharing what he has learned about them to anyone and everyone that will listen! \nWhat to Expect \n\nDress in comfortable layers\, long pants and comfortable\, closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or sandals).\nPortable toilet present in main parking lot.\nThe planned hike will take us through some of the easier trails\, but all Byrne trails are considered “moderate” intensity and contain long uphill segments.\n\n\nThe Byrne-Milliron Forest is 400-acre property conserved and protected by the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County for forest restoration\, recreation\, and sustainable timber harvest. Public access includes 10 miles of dog-friendly trails. The Land Trust is supported by members and donors. Visit their website to learn how to get involved: https://landtrustsantacruz.org/

SUMMARY:Naturalist Night: Illustrating the Birds of Santa Cruz
DESCRIPTION:Join local author-illustrator and Art of Nature artist Sophie Wood Brinker for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Birds of Santa Cruz. In this engaging talk\, Wood Brinker will share her creative process for illustrating the 25 bird species featured in her book\, from early field observations along the coast to the final hand-painted portraits. \nBlending art\, science\, and storytelling\, she’ll explore how careful attention to movement\, behavior\, and habitat informs her work\, and how illustration can deepen our connection to the natural world. Attendees will gain insight into techniques for capturing birds in paint\, as well as the inspiration drawn from watching everything from Brown Pelicans gliding over the waves to California Quail gathering in community. Whether you’re an artist\, bird enthusiast\, or simply curious about the intersection of creativity and conservation\, this presentation offers an exploration of what it means to truly see—and translate—that vision onto the page. \n$12 – General\n$5 Off – Museum Members\nREGISTER\nAbout the book: \nThis charming\, full-color guide to the birds of Santa Cruz is infused with California coastal soul and the quiet fierceness of love one can only derive from ardent attention. From the collective organizing of the Brown Pelican\, to the community protection of the California Quail\, to the Band-Tailed Pigeon flock that Wood Brinker likens to a mutual aid cooperative\, these birds have stories to tell. Vivid hand-painted portraits accompanied by identification and song notes help everyone get to know their avian neighbors\, with descriptions of each species that invoke reflections from Diane di Prima\, Mary Oliver\, and dreamers of all stripes. A joy to read and pore over\, Birds of Santa Cruz shimmers with poetic sensibility and a conservationist ethos. Wood Brinker’s findings\, gleaned from patient observation\, will enchant readers far beyond the city limits. Books will be available in the Museum Store at the event or can be purchased Online. \nAbout the Speaker \nSophie Wood Brinker (she/her) is a science illustrator who works with paint and pencil to communicate the brilliance and intricacy of the ecosystems that surround us. Her art scales from drawing the texture of butterfly wings to painting fifteen-foot protest banners. Sophie also works in a small town library\, helping spread library joy and community resources. As a Quaker\, Sophie grew up sitting in intergenerational circles hearing messages spoken out of silence. She has a BA in peace and global studies from Earlham College and is a graduate of the Science Illustration Program at California State University\, Monterey Bay. Sophie grew up in Santa Cruz\, California\, on unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe\, and lives in Bolinas\, California\, on unceded Coast Miwok territory. www.sophiewoodbrinker.com \nAccessibility and Logistics \n\nThis program will take place indoors at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. SUMMARY:La Vita Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Wine is about more than grapes\, it’s art\, community\, and connection. As an homage to our Northern Italian roots\, Bargetto Winery grows three Italian varietals at Regan Vineyards in Corralitos: Dolcetto\, Nebbiolo\, and Refosco. For 25 years now\, we have thoughtfully blended these grapes to produce our flagship wine\, La Vita. Each year\, we select a work of art to use as our label for that vintage of La Vita. The only rule is that the label art must involve wine. As times change\, so does the art on our bottles\, a reflection of the world around us. Mirroring the thoughtfulness with which we create La Vita\, we select a local non-profit to which we donate proceeds from La Vita sales. Bargetto Winery is extremely excited to announce our next beneficiary of the La Vita program and will reveal the organization at the release party on June 7 th \, 2026. The 2022 La Vita has been carefully aging for nearly four years now: two in barrel and two in bottle\, and we’re thrilled to share it with you. Buy your tickets now to attend the release party\, try our previous vintages of La Vita\, enjoy live music and hear about the world of wine\, art\, and community. \nBargetto Winery is happy to allocate 25 La Vita Release Party tickets to members of the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History at the same pricing as the winery’s Wine Club member tickets. To purchase tickets at member pricing\, use the coupon code “MuseumWine” at checkout under “Order Details\,” but be sure to select a “general” ticket using the link below.\nhttps://bargetto.orderport.net/product-details/0665/la-vita-release-party
