After the talk\, you’ll have the opportunity to observe live plankton under a microscope and get an up-close look at these incredible microscopic organisms. \nWhether you’re a curious beachgoer\, an aspiring naturalist\, or simply fascinated by the ocean\, this lecture will leave you with a new appreciation for the life drifting just beneath the surface. She earned her undergraduate degree in science with an emphasis in marine science from UC Santa Cruz and her graduate degree in Invertebrate Marine Ecology from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. \nDuring her 33 years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium\, Jane worked on all three plankton guide stations\, sharing the fascinating world of plankton with visitors from around the globe. She has also taught plankton through Cabrillo College’s Pacific Plankton Program for nearly six years\, inspiring students to explore the remarkable microscopic organisms that support life in the ocean. \nJane is passionate about making the microscopic world accessible to audiences of all ages and helping others discover the incredible diversity of life drifting just beneath the surface. \n\nAccessibility and Logistics: \nThis program will take place indoors at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. Join the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project for an exclusive tour of their hatchery in Davenport where you’ll enjoy an overview of salmonids\, their lifecycle\, ecology\, and the natural and human-caused threats they face. This tour will explore the differences between hatchery models\, highlighting work focused on conservation\, genetic diversity\, disease mitigation\, ecosystem health and optimizing wild survival. \nThe MBSTP Kingfisher Flat Genetic Conservation Hatchery (KFGCH) has been in operation since 1985\, and is the only privately-run salmonid rearing facility on California’s Central Coast. DESCRIPTION:Butterflies are known for intricate wing patterns and flitting flight patterns. They are also indicators of the health of our environment and ecosystems\, especially those that migrate across our state and region.  Join Megan Gnekow\, a local scientific illustrator\, for an evening exploring the beauty and resilience of some of our most famous flying friends as you sip on wine\, beer or seltzer water of your choice. With materials provided by the instructor\, you will practice techniques for illustrating them accurately in colored pencil. For your illustrations\, Megan will provide specimens and photographs to help illuminate the details needed to create accurate and life-like illustrations. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nMegan Gnekow is an artist and scientific illustrator whose work focuses on ecological relationships that support special-status species in California. She represents the 7th generation of her family with deep ties to Santa Cruz. She has supported the Art of Nature exhibit as both a juror and participant since 2010.
