After the talk\, you’ll have the opportunity to observe live plankton under a microscope and get an up-close look at these incredible microscopic organisms. \nWhether you’re a curious beachgoer\, an aspiring naturalist\, or simply fascinated by the ocean\, this lecture will leave you with a new appreciation for the life drifting just beneath the surface. These amazing organisms form the base of the marine food web\, produce much of the oxygen we breathe\, influence the color of the ocean\, and support countless species throughout Monterey Bay and beyond. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\nLocation: Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History\nTicket Price: $12 General | $8 Students\nDiscounts: $5 member discount \n\nAbout the Speaker: \nJane Silberstein brings more than 40 years of experience studying and teaching about the marine life of Monterey Bay. She earned her undergraduate degree in science with an emphasis in marine science from UC Santa Cruz and her graduate degree in Invertebrate Marine Ecology from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. \nDuring her 33 years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium\, Jane worked on all three plankton guide stations\, sharing the fascinating world of plankton with visitors from around the globe. She has also taught plankton through Cabrillo College’s Pacific Plankton Program for nearly six years\, inspiring students to explore the remarkable microscopic organisms that support life in the ocean. \nJane is passionate about making the microscopic world accessible to audiences of all ages and helping others discover the incredible diversity of life drifting just beneath the surface. \n\nAccessibility and Logistics: \nThis program will take place indoors at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. Seating will be provided\, and light refreshments will be available. \nFeel free to bring a notebook or sketchbook and something to write with if you’d like to take notes during the talk. Portions of the UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus and adjacent Wilder Ranch State Park are characterized by a rare phenomena on the West Coast–karst topography. A karst landscape features sinkholes\, streams that dive underground\, springs\, caves\, and more. \nJoin geologist and retired UCSC Earth and Planetary Sciences Senior Lecturer Dr. Hilde Schwartz and UCSC Campus Natural Reserve Manager Alex Jones for an exploration of the fractured marble bedrock of Empire Cave and learn about the hydrological and geological processes that created it\, as well as some of the biology that makes it an incredibly rare ecosystem. \n  \nPROGRAM FULL – Email info@santacruzmuseum.org to join the waitlist\n  \nTicket Price: $30\nDiscounts: $5 off off for Members\nCapacity: 17\nAge: 18+ \nAbout the Speakers: \nAlex Jones has been an environmental educator for over 25 years\, practicing natural history while leading students ranging from preschoolers to senior citizens. Alex currently works as the UC Santa Cruz Campus Natural Reserve Manager and supports education\, research\, and stewardship activities on campus natural lands. As part of his duties\, Alex is responsible for monitoring and managing the campus’s Empire Cave. \nHilde Schwartz is an earth scientist who’s dabbled in both geology and paleontology. Her research always begins ‘in the field’\, and her main field regions have been in Africa (Kenya\, Tanzania\, Egypt) and the American southwest (including California). Participated in research with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History on dinosaur sites in New Mexico. In the late 1990s\, she proposed a new class at UCSC called ‘The Natural History of Dinosaurs’\, which she taught from 1999 until her retirement from the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department in 2024. Hilde maintains an active interest in dinosaur research and will always be a dinosaur enthusiast. \n  \n  \n\nAccessibility and Logistics: \n\nMust be able to walk ~1.25 miles over hilly terrain (with some steep sections)\, uneven ground and descend/ascend a ladder into the cave.  \nLights and Helmets will be provided.\nMeetup information will be shared with registrants prior to the event.\n\nCancellation Policy
