Join the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project for an exclusive tour of their hatchery in Davenport where you’ll enjoy an overview of salmonids\, their lifecycle\, ecology\, and the natural and human-caused threats they face. This tour will explore the differences between hatchery models\, highlighting work focused on conservation\, genetic diversity\, disease mitigation\, ecosystem health and optimizing wild survival. \nThe MBSTP Kingfisher Flat Genetic Conservation Hatchery (KFGCH) has been in operation since 1985\, and is the only privately-run salmonid rearing facility on California’s Central Coast. DESCRIPTION:* September SITS will be held on the second Saturday\, Sept 12th* \nEvery third Saturday of the month\, we invite volunteers to come together as a community to steward Tyrrell Park through the City’s Adopt-A-Park program. During this volunteering event\, you’ll get your hands dirty assisting with the maintenance of the park\, our pollinator garden\, and Pilkington Creek\, while gaining insights into local ecology\, native plants\, and sustainable gardening from Museum Gardener\, Laura Kummerer. \nSaturdays in the Soil happen every third Saturday of the month. \n​Sign up via Volgistics or email volunteer@santacruzmuseum.org to register.\nWhat to Expect \n\nThis project requires volunteer support with general landscaping\, occasional watering\, weeding\, and replanting.\nPlease let us know if you need special accommodations when you email to RSVP.\nThis program happens rain or shine\, but we will cancel in the case of muddy conditions or inclement weather.\nAll ages are welcome; children under 14 require adult supervision. Volunteers under 18 require a parent/guardian to sign waivers.

DESCRIPTION:Butterflies are known for intricate wing patterns and flitting flight patterns. They are also indicators of the health of our environment and ecosystems\, especially those that migrate across our state and region.  Join Megan Gnekow\, a local scientific illustrator\, for an evening exploring the beauty and resilience of some of our most famous flying friends as you sip on wine\, beer or seltzer water of your choice. With materials provided by the instructor\, you will practice techniques for illustrating them accurately in colored pencil. For your illustrations\, Megan will provide specimens and photographs to help illuminate the details needed to create accurate and life-like illustrations. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nMegan Gnekow is an artist and scientific illustrator whose work focuses on ecological relationships that support special-status species in California. She represents the 7th generation of her family with deep ties to Santa Cruz. She has supported the Art of Nature exhibit as both a juror and participant since 2010.
