DESCRIPTION:Join artist Jane Kim and Jenny Rieke\, the Museum’s Associate Director of Education\, in conversation about the art and science of interpreting nature. Learn how the artwork for the Treasured Trees exhibit was developed\, and hear how the partnership between institutions like the Museum and artists can bring to life scientific concepts for public education in exhibits and interpretive signs in green spaces like Cotoni-Coast Dairies. Enjoy light bites and wine while viewing the Treasured Trees exhibit in its final weekend. \nREGISTER\nThis event is exclusively for Club Level Members and Sempervirens Fund invitees.\nLearn more about Club Level Memberships \nAbout the Speakers \nJane Kim is a visual artist\, science illustrator\, and the founder of Ink Dwell. Her art career started when she was a little girl\, obsessively painting flowers and bears on the walls of her bedroom. She received more formal training with a BFA in Printmaking from RISD and then attended CSU Monterey Bay\, where she received a master’s certificate in Science Illustration. She has created large-scale public art across the country\, including the Wall of Birds at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and produced works for the National Aquarium\, the de Young Museum\, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum\, and more. She is the creator of the Migrating Mural campaign\, a series of public installations that highlight wildlife along migration corridors it shares with people. She still enjoys painting flowers and bears\, though nowadays she doesn’t get in trouble for painting on the walls. As the inaugural Forest Fellow of the Sempervirens Fund\, the oldest land trust in California and one dedicated to the protection of the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains\, Jane Kim has spent the last year studying the wonders of redwood trees. \nAs Associate Director of Education\, Jenny Rieke leads the development of exhibits and programs that connect people to the natural world through science\, art\, and storytelling. She collaborated with artist Jane Kim on Treasured Trees and on the interpretive signs for Cotoni-Coast Dairies. Jenny holds a degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz and has worked as an educator and field biologist for a variety of environmental organizations. She joined the Museum in 2022 and brings a deep passion for creating meaningful\, field-based learning experiences that inspire curiosity and care for the environment. \n
