11/17 Paleontology Expedition: The Marine Fossils of the Monterey Bay

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity to participate in a paleontological expedition to uncover the remains of extinct marine life. Guided by paleontologist Wayne Thompson, travel 5 million years back in time to the bottom of the seafloor and discover the prehistoric creatures of the ancient Monterey Bay area.

Participants will search, decipher, and find the fossilized remains of rarely-seen ancient creatures unearthed along the Santa Cruz shoreline. From giant prehistoric mammals, including whales and walruses, to micro-fossils of shellfish and plankton, who knows what will be found on this expedition! Open to ages 14+

What to Expect:  

  • Exact meet-up location will be shared upon registration.
  • Binoculars, a hand-held magnifying lens, a notebook, a pen/pencil, a backpack, and a camera are optional but recommended.
  • There are no restrooms or facilities once the walk starts.
  • Wear layers and comfortable shoes – the terrain will consist of sand and slippery rocks along the shoreline.
  • A reusable water bottle is highly recommended.
  • Bring adequate sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.) – there is little shade coverage in the area.
  • Pets must remain at home.
  • If you need to cancel, refunds will be offered up to 4 days before the start of the event.

About the Instructor

Wayne Thompson, CEO of Pacific Paleontology, a local fossil mitigation firm on construction sites and non-profit outreach in local schools, universities, and museums. Former local Science Teacher and paleontologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park; Current Research Associate with U.C. Berkeley Museum of Paleontology & the California Academy of Sciences, Paleontology Collections Advisor with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, and Cultural Resources Commissioner for the City of Scotts Valley.
